There are actually two versions of forklift: forklift 3 is the premium version you use and forklift 2 is the free version available on the mac app store. And by the way, i prefer the free version because i copy files between servers a lot using sftp, and in forklift 2 these videos are copied directly and are not located on the local computer. But in forklift 3, for some inexplicable reason, such files are first copied to a temporary local copy, and only when the file is completely received, it is copied to the target system, so transferring files between remote systems takes twice as long as in forklift. 2. Also, i like it when the transfer progress bar is always visible quickly, like in forklift 2, however, in forklift 3 you have to press a button to see it, which annoys me. I still don’t see any merit in using forklift 3, although i think there are factors why some others might pull it off.
Since you’ve found that free and paid versions of other software have been developed, that you listed , you can also mention the free version of forklift in the app store.
- Brian jackson april 8, 2020 12:13 pm
Hi mark! Thanks for the forklift warning. I didn’t know about the free version on the app store. Is this one still being updated? This suggests that the last update was over 4 years ago. I’d be worried about compatibility with catalina etc.
2. Bill april 3, 2020 3:09 pm
Brian, i am so paying respect, and you are writing them again! Long time reader, kinsta and customer of perfmatters. Thanks for the suggestions bear and boxy.
As for the browser, i also use chrome since i tried brave. Synchronization is really weak. You may like the vivaldi browser from brave co-founder. Really first-class synchronization and so much effort besides that on the basis of chrome. I also highly recommend the ublock origin plugin for an ad blocker (i know it’s an engine that uses brave). I respect eff, but i think badger is a little underwhelming in performance. I use their https plugin everywhere. Just make sure it’s «ublock origin» because there are fakes out there.
All the best. Take care.
- Brian jackson april 8, 2020 12:10 pm
Hi bill! I’m glad return. 🙂 Thanks for the suggestions, will have to try vivaldi. The brave team recently announced that they will fix the sync issue soon, fingers crossed accordingly.
3. Jack june 27, 2020 7:35 am</>Great list! I can tell that you really cared about writing this article, unlike most fans who have no trouble compiling a list.
Quick tip: i’ve been using keka for an hour now and i like it a lot better than the one you mentioned. How about giving it a try?
Also, when you mentioned, brave seems to have fixed their sync! I’d love to hear your thoughts.
- Brian jackson june 28, 2020 8:38 pm
Thanks, i hate the post list . However, if i’m going to write something, i feel like there must be some substance to it.
Cool, i’ll check out keka. I think brave nightly has a new sync, however, not a production version. We are really close! Hopefully we can update my list soon with brave instead of chrome.
4. Alex august 19, 2020 4:46 am
Haven’t heard of mailplane — i used missive (https://missiveapp.Com which i think you’ll love too…
It’s great to see you’re using a mac again! 😉
- Brian jackson august 19, 2020 1:46 pm
Hi alex yes i used missive it happens that.If if i didn’t need a gmail client (some features are still native to gmail), i’d be guaranteed to % use missive. The message is amazing!
5. . 7:59
Great list, thanks!</>You should definitely try the meetingbar (https://meetingbar.Onrender.Com) to pass the time before your eyes and join them with one click. But this is with free primary code: https://github .Com/leits/meetingbar
6. D march 14 2021 00:41
Great list i’m brand new th macos user who just couldn’t help but succumb to the m1 airbook after a lifetime of using windows and linux. Magnet looks awesome app and i’ll replicate my windowing setup created with displayfusion in windows.
7. Yedija vanutama june 16, 2021 at 6:14 pm
Mailplane won’t turn on… What are you using then? https://mailplaneapp.Com/blog/entry/mailplane_stopped_selling_licenses.Html
- Brian jackson june 16, 2021 7:20 pm
Hi ediya, yes, i will update our posts soon. For now i’ve switched to mimestream. The developer has added a lot of improvements, and it’s incredibly fast.
- Chris november 15, 2021, 10:57 pm
hi brian, how do you find mimestream versus spark for your main email client?
What are the advantages or disadvantages of each?
- Brian jackson nov 23, 2021 9:41 pm
Mimestream is 100 times better. Besides, with spark they won’t let you shorten the default font length everywhere. Maybe i’ve been staring into the light for a year or two, but that alone broke my deal. I never had time to use spark. They don’t listen to visitor feedback yet, as many people have asked for this. I went down this rabbit hole. I asked for a few features and the mimestream developer added them.
8. Diana h september 23, 2021 1:47 am
Alfred is amazing! There is a free alternative to a magnet called rectangle. Also one of my favorite/underrated mac apps is zuriweb. Best collection, brian!
- Brian jackson december 23, 2021, 12:44 pm
Yes, i did move to rectangle today and updated the post above. Great app!
9. April king october 5, 2021 7:07 am
As someone with three monitors, i find myself totally lost without «mouse shake to find». This is one of the mostmost celebrated special perspectives in macos, and the user rarely notices it unless looking for their cursor and failing to find it.
- Brian jackson dec 23, 2021 12:50 pm
Hi april i’m the complete opposite haha. I find this to be the most annoying feature. But i can see how a landing page can be useful if you regularly lose track of your cursor. I’ve set up one monitor, so it’s probably not too hard for me.
10. Pen helm december 2, 2021, 8:36 pm
Apps not mentioned that i liked:
Smartreporter — why the os doesn’t warn you about disk problems that i don’t know about! Resolutionator — opens various modes video. I use it to cram more into the monitor, and less text. Doesn’t work on m1 either. (There are many alternatives for this, but this one is pretty good.) Menumeters — puts cpu usage, memory usage, disk activity, etc. In the menu bar. Smart scrolling — for smooth scrolling instead of jerky. Security utilities objective-see.Com. Keyboard maestro — i use it to make each function key call a separate application, but over the years it has become more powerful and can do almost anything if every event happens. Displaperture210 — small tick — rounded corners on desktop
- Pen helm december 2, 2021, 20 :57
carbon copy cloner is a lightweight and time-tested backup software. It even has the ability to detect and replace corrupted files! Nomachine — remote screen clubbing — operational but a bit buggy. Jitsi meet — like zoom. Free, open source, running in your browser.
11. Matt december 14, 2021, 2:13 pm
Hello!
Great article!! I have been using mac for years. You’ve used the following sites before: rectangleapp.Com clipy-app.Com
Both options are free and very important.
— Brian jackson december 23, 2021 12:40 pm
Hi matt! I actually switched to rectangle more than a month ago. Definitely a great app. Free and with free primary code. I replaced magnet with rectangle in the post above.
12. Jakub december 17, 2021 3:00 pm
Hi brian , i love the article. I’ve been a windows user for a well device all ages, but i recently switched back to mac after 4 years of using windows for specific purposes/study. This article gave me a lot of encouragement as i set up macos again with a new one. I personally use the control button in the original location, the brain can actually hardwire the connection to both ctr/cmd modes at the same time (it’s like switching between uk and usa in terms of driving — my brain learned this in a matter of months in order to stay able to drive left in the morning and right in the afternoon :d! )
I also recommend mos for smooth mouse scrolling, ferdi for grouping apps for chat, and many other social media. Distractions and clipboardmanager are essential.
P.S.: I encourage you to try penc instead of magnet — i use sizer in future windows that is max% configurable, which is something i lack in magnet in the first place when on multiple screens/4k screens. Penc even uses a different route, which i fell in love with in ten minutes!
Take care of yourself.
13. Roman december 18, 2021, 4:07
Great! Thank you! It helped a lot!
I just didn’t know what it is and what products it is in?
>>> in the “system settings” category, disable “system control.”
I have a russian version of macos. Can you show me in the screenshot what you meant?
- Brian jackson december 23, 2021 12:55 pm
Hi roman, this doesn’t exist now. I believe the macos update removed this. I’ve updated the post above.
14. Uxjunkie dec 18, 2021 12:05 pm
Mailplane says how they are not long ago i do not sell licenses! 🙁 Might need to update the post!
- Brian jackson december 20, 2021, 8:48 pm
Yes, i am switched to mimestream i just updated the post love the app: https://woorkup.Com/best-mac-apps/#mimestream
15. Zoltan dec 27 2021 6:38
Hi brian ,
Did you mention that you lived in hungary for a while, what’s the story behind that? On topic: amazing list, i installed the vast majority of them as an inexperienced mac user :)
- Brian jackson dec 29, 2021 3:53 pm
Hi zoltan, i don’t live in hungary, but i visited budapest a couple of times during my stay in kinsta. 🙂 They founded the company in budapest. This place is awesome!
16. Ryback sizer lomboy february 19, 2022 10:28 pm
Hi mark!</>I just wanted to let them know that in the absence of such an article, i don’t think i could have finally moved to any first macbook from pc in my life up to this point. . Dato, bartender, rectangle, the unarchiver and alfred were a revelation!
- Brian jackson june 8, 2022 4:17 pm
Hey ryback, glad to hear it! There are so many great apps on mac. I switched to mac too after using pc for over 20 years: https://woorkup.Com/switching-from-windows-pc-to-mac/
17. Ajay february 20, 2022 00:23 am
Try swish. This is life changing.
- Brian jackson june 20, 2022 00:07 am
Hi ajay! Looks cool. But i’m a mouse man. Even when i’m on the road, i carry my mouse with me all the time, so i rarely use the trackpad.
18. Michelle march 22, 2022, 8:39 pm
Do you have any idea of a good gsuite app for mac so i can easily access gsuite files and add packages to emails?
- Brian jackson june 8, 2022 3:49 pm
Hi michelle, i’m using mimestream, it’s great! See here: https://woorkup.Com/best-mac-apps/#mimestream
19. Hanna may 10, 2022 00:03</>Brian, thanks for the list. Grammarly is a very useful tool. Have you tried sidenotes? I use it a lot every day for quick notes and instant access to books, addresses, etc. On the side of the screen.
- Brian jackson june 8, 2022, 14:07
Hi hannah, no, i haven’t tried the sidenotes. Looks interesting!
20. Dissapointed july 4, 2022, 11:00 am
Then we got to google chrome and the right recommendations veered aside.
- Brian jackson july 4, 2022, 3:57 pm
Yes, the brave has problems with the great many pages. Firefox, safari and edge don’t have all the tools that i need for my work. If other browsers could catch up in terms of usability, i would love to switch to them. But they don’t exist yet.
Besides, if you ignore all the recommendations, relying on one of a kind, the players don’t want to, your life will be very stressful. Then you would have the opportunity to try to be constructive in your comment, otherwise you will easily waste people’s time.
21. Juh july 5, 2022, 7:49 pm
Great list!
Do you know a good solution to disable magic mouse touch? Magic mouse is such a pita when editing images.
Also check out tayasui sketches, an easy drawing version. Too easy to use.
- Brian jackson july 5, 2022 8:12 pm
Hi juh, unfortunately, i have never used magic mouse. I prefer a regular mouse. Does this article help? https://osxdaily.Com/2017/08/17/disable-multitouch-magic-mouse-mac/
I'll take a look at tayasui’s sketches, thanks for the suggestion!</>22. Kyle august 29, 2022 5:15 am
Mimestream is exactly what i got the idea for. 🙌
- Brian jackson august 29, 2022 2:46 pm
Hi kyle, glad to hear that!Mimstream is great. I have no more gmail chrome tabs left.
23. Pavel august 31, 2022 10:55 am
Some honorable choices mine:
Itsycal for the most convenient date lookup (free alternative to dato) keka is also great for maintaining 7z/rar/zip (free and also open source) iterm2 in role alternative terminal app (free and open source) aldente to optimize battery charging (free and paid versions)cocobattery (free)mos (free and open source app to fix assistive device scrolling for a non-apple mouse, such as a cheap microsoft bluetooth mouse ($15) syncthing (free of charge and open source) for syncing data across two or three devices keepassxc is an alternative to 1password flycut is long lasting and no charge clipboard manager (keeps clipboard history, although unable to unfortunately clear the formatting)
- Brian jackson september 5, 2022 5:45 pm
Hi pavel! Jipnet september 24, 2022, 6:18 pm
Not mentioned, but a mimestream feature to love : you will get a great chance to change the order of conversations, from the latest to the previously released. This is not easy to do in safari.
If you have any concerns about where and how to use top software, you can contact us at the address of the web page.
